Official Bio

Janeé Steele is the Owner of Kalamazoo Cognitive and Behavioral Therapy, PLLC

As owner of Kalamazoo Cognitive and Behavioral Therapy, PLLC, Dr. Janeé Steele provides therapy, supervision, and training in cognitive-behavioral therapy. She is also an educator, author, and researcher whose work brings culture into clinical practice and research to support healing, insight, and connection.

Culture plays a powerful role in how we see ourselves, relate to others, and experience mental health care. When cultural context is ignored or misunderstood, people can feel unseen or dismissed, which can affect emotional well-being, trust, and engagement. Over time, this can contribute to stress, burnout, and psychological harm, especially for individuals navigating identity-based challenges.

My work focuses on helping people and professionals understand how culture, identity, and lived experience shape thoughts, emotions, and behavior. I bridge clinical practice and research to support healing, insight, and meaningful connection. At the core of my approach is increasing self-awareness and encouraging ongoing reflection as part of ethical, effective mental health care.

Racism and African American Mental Health examines the psychological impacts of racism within the African American community and offers a culturally adapted model of cognitive behavior therapy for more culturally relevant case conceptualization and treatment planning with this population. Readers of this text will gain a greater understanding of how manifestations of racism contribute to the development of psychological distress among African Americans and learn specific strategies to address the negative automatic thoughts and maladaptive beliefs that develop in response to racism. Reflection questions and guided practice are incorporated throughout the text to assist readers with application of the strategies discussed in their own clinical settings.
